The Mountain Studio

"What a wonderful atmosphere in which to sew! Lunch was delicious and a very good way to come together. Your kindness and generosity are refreshing and appreciated. I look forward to coming back."

Our Mountain Studio was designed for creativity – sewing, knitting, or whatever you choose.   The setting is in a serene forest, with deep quiet and peace to encourage your creative spirit. You will have all the conveniences of home, but none of the interruptions and stress. The atmosphere in the studio is of one's favorite living room, rather than a sterile classroom environment.  Even the small touches in the décor are designed to encourage your spirit -- the windows are on the bias and the carpet is a Liberty Of London print.

Mountain Sewing Studio in Pinecliffe, COLOCATION: The Mountain Studio is only 40 minutes from Boulder, located near Pinecliffe, CO, at 8300 feet in elevation.  Temperatures year around are typically 15 degrees cooler than in Boulder.  After a day of sewing in the studio, it feels like you've had a complete vacation.

CLASS SIZE: Classes are restricted in size, to make sure that everyone gets to enjoy the facilities to the fullest.

CLASS TOPICS: You are welcome to bring your own projects, for help and support. Or, you can come join us on a day when we have a specific project in mind.

SEWING MACHINES: For sewing classes, you are welcome to bring your own machine or to use our Berninas. Please let us know your preference in advance, so that we are sure to reserve a machine for you.

TRANSPORTATION: We will provide you with a simple map, if you would like to drive.  Alternately, you can take the bus in to Nederland and we will come pick you up.  Buses run up Boulder Canyon on an hourly basis. If your friends/family would like to join you in this day of relaxation, they are welcome to come along.  They can enjoy the birdwatching, the hiking, or just sitting on the deck and reading a book.

FOOD: A full lunch is included each day. If you have specific eating requirements or preferences, please let us know in advance.

BIRDS: The hummingbirds arrive in May and stay until September.  They eat more than 100 pounds of sugar a year.  You can expect to see four different species:  broadtails, caliope, black chinned and rufous.  And, yes, they will fly right up and land on your fingers while they eat.  They are so tiny, it is almost impossible to feel them land.
Other birds that are common in the area are: chickadees (2 species), nuthatches (3 species), jays (3 species), mountain bluebirds, grossbeaks (3 species), woodpeckers (2 species), great horned owls, red tailed hawks, sharp shinned hawks, crows, western tanangiers, crossbills, cowbirds, clark's nutcracker, house finches, cassins finch, juncos (3 species), magpies, pine siskins, and red winged blackbirds.

HIKING: Although most participants can’t tear themselves away from the classroom creativity, if you bring your family/friends along, hiking might be an activity that they would enjoy.  You can walk from the studio, out to National Forest, and on to the top of Rollins Peak (9,125 feet), often without seeing anyone.  That hike takes about an hour to get to the top of the Peak, but it is well worth the climb.  You are welcome to stay after classes and hike as far as you would like.

For those who are less ambitious, there is a delightful meadow, within half a mile walk, that is full of columbine and other beautiful wildflowers.  Three different species of native orchids are easily found on the property of The Mountain Studio, in the early spring. Other flowers follow in delightful succession throughout the summer.
